Since the very beginning, Orv has played a key role in shaping Directions’ mission while developing new programs that emphasize our person-centered philosophy.
As chief consultant on clinical issues and program development, Orv provides expert advice to Directions staff members along with our consumers and their family members. A licensed psychologist with more than 30 years of experience in the disabilities field, Orv also serves as Professor of Education in the Psychology Department at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. He’s the coordinator of UConn’s counseling program as well as a widely published and respected consultant…both nationally and internationally.
Orv recently co-authored the highly acclaimed book: "Community Rehabilitation Services for Individuals with Disabilities." A past president of the Vocational Rehabilitation Division of the American Association on Mental Retardation, he serves on the boards of several non-profit agencies and is a member of the American Counsel Association and the American Psychological Association. Dr. Karan recently retired from active service as a certified rehabilitation counselor.
